Harwood, Elizabeth (1938–1990)

English soprano. She studied at the Royal Manchester College of Music and appeared with the Sadler's Wells Theatre, London, from 1961 as Gilda, Zerbinetta, Constanze, and Rossini's Adèle. In 1967 she sang for the first time at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, with the Scottish Opera, and at the Aix Festival: her roles included Tippett's Bella, Fiordiligi (the role she sang on her New York Metropolitan Opera House debut in 1975), and Strauss's Sophie. She performed at Salzburg from 1970, as Donna Elvira and Mozart's Countess. In 1980 she sang the Marschallin at Glyndebourne.
