Háry János

Ballad opera by Zoltán Kodály (libretto by B Paulini and Z Harsányi, based on a poem by János Garay), first produced in Budapest, Hungary, on 16 October 1926. It contains popular Hungarian tunes and begins with an orchestral imitation of a sneeze. The orchestral suite was first performed in New York, USA, on 15 December 1927. In the work, János tells tall tales about his youth, spent defeating Napoleon and winning the heart of the emperor's wife; all along he remained true to his bride back in his native village.
