Hasdrubal (died 222 BC)

Carthaginian general. He succeeded to the command of the Carthaginian forces in Spain on the death of his father-in-law Hamilcar Barca 229 BC. Hasdrubal founded Carthago Nova (New Carthage, modern Cartagena), and in 226 concluded with Rome a treaty which established the River Iberus (Ebro) as the boundary between Roman (in the north) and Carthaginian (in the south) spheres of influence in Spain. Hasdrubal was murdered by a slave whose master he had put to death.
