hash function

In computing, an algorithm that calculates a value from the content of a message which can then be used to detect alterations to the original message.

Similar to a checksum but with greater security, hash functions play an important role in secure cryptographic systems (see cryptography), where authentication is as important as hiding the data from third parties.

In addition, the DataFort platform now incorporates enhanced system security features, including hardware-based SHA-512 cryptographic hash functions.
Due to advances in technology, NIST plans to phase out SHA-1 and other cryptographic algorithms of similar strength to SHA-1, in favor of the larger hash functions (SHA-224, SHA-256, SHA-384 and SHA-512) by 2010.
