hash function

In computing, an algorithm that calculates a value from the content of a message which can then be used to detect alterations to the original message.

Similar to a checksum but with greater security, hash functions play an important role in secure cryptographic systems (see cryptography), where authentication is as important as hiding the data from third parties.
