Hasselt

Capital of the Belgian province of Limbourg; population (2001 est) 68,800. The town manufactures linen fabrics and tobacco, and has gin distilleries.

Belgian forces were defeated at Hasselt by the Dutch in 1831. After World War I, the town began to grow as the industrial capital of the new Kempen coalfield nearby. Some 8 km/5 mi east of Hasselt lies the open-air museum of Bokrijk, which offers a reconstruction of traditional Belgian village life.
