Hat Yai

City in Songkhla province, southwest Thailand; population (2000 est) 185,600. Sited on the Bangkok–Singapore railway, Hat Yai is a busy commercial and railway centre, and is the administrative centre for Thailand's southern region. It has an important rubber research institute. Production of rubber is the main industry, but cotton and silk production are also important. The city lies on the U Taphao River in a part of the Malay Peninsula which has rich tin resources.

Hat Yai, Krabi and Phuket airports in southern Thailand were closed on August 29 but the airports have since re-opened and a Thai Airways' spokeswoman in Bangkok says the Star Alliance's carrier's services to Hat Yai and Krabi returned to normal yesterday morning and Phuket returned to normal yesterday at 2:00 local time.
Three major Thai airports - Phuket, Krabi and Hat Yai - were closed for most of the weekend and the state's rail network paralysed by strikes coordinated by the People's Alliance for Democracy (Pad).
So far only Hat Yai has reopened, leaving air links cut to Phuket, the crown jewel of Thai tourism -- an industry that generates six percent of the economy.
