hatha yoga

System of exercises for the body and mind originally based on the teachings of Patanjali. True hatha yoga includes his eight steps: yama, self-restraint; niyama, spiritual discipline; asana, sitting posture; pranayama, breath control; pratyahara, withdrawal of the senses; dharana, contemplation; dhyana, meditation; and samadhi, total absorption in God. In its modern popular form, particular emphasis is placed upon posture and breathing techniques to produce a state of physical and mental well-being.
