Hato Rey

Commercial district of San Juan, capital of Puerto Rico. Situated on the mainland south of Santurce, it comprises three barrios (neighbourhoods): Hato Rey Norte, Central, and Sur. The district has a total population of 51,400.

With aid from the federal economic development initiative ‘Operation Bootstrap’, Hato Rey has grown from a relatively small residential and industrial suburb in the 1960s into a thriving business and financial centre by the 1990s. It now houses a variety of modern office buildings, including the headquarters of many Caribbean banks and other major businesses, especially along the so-called ‘Golden Mile’ section of Route 1. A large modern mall is sited here, as are two sports stadiums, the Estadios Hiram Bithorn and Roberto Clemente.
