Hattiesburg

City and seat of Forrest County, southeastern Mississippi; population (2000) 44,800. Hattiesburg stands on the Leaf River, 137 km/85 mi southeast of Jackson. Part of the city also lies in Lamar County.

The arrival of railroads in Hattiesburg in 1884 and 1897 stimulated the infant community's lumber and naval stores industries, but in the 20th century, as local timber resources dwindled, the city has diversified into the manufacture of textiles (especially silk), chemicals, and metal products. It is also an agricultural trade centre, and home to the University of Southern Mississippi (founded 1910), which has the state's second largest enrollment, and to William Carey College (founded 1906).
