Haugen, Einar Ingvald (1906–1994)

US linguist. As professor of Scandinavian languages at the University of Wisconsin (1931–75) and as emeritus professor at Harvard University (1975), he wrote extensively on the teaching of Scandinavian languages, particularly Norwegian, and on bilingualism and language contact. Among his works are a Norwegian-English Dictionary (1965), Language Conflict and Language Planning (1966), and The Scandinavian Languages (1976). He is also known for his scholarship on the plays of Henrik Ibsen. Haugen was born in Sioux City, Iowa.
