Haugen, Gilbert

Haugen, Gilbert (Nelson) (1859–1933)

US politician. Active in Iowa Republican politics, he served in the state senate before going to the US House of Representatives (1899–1923). Chairman of the Agriculture Committee (1919–31), he sponsored farm relief measures, including the McNary-Haugen bill to send agricultural surpluses abroad. The son of a Norwegian farmer, Haugen was born in Rock County, Wisconsin. He bought land at age 18 and later went into banking.
