Haugland, Aage (1944–2000)

Danish-born Norwegian bass. He sang first at Oslo and Bremen, and appeared at Stockholm from 1973. In 1975 he was heard as Hunding (Die Walküre) at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, and as Hagen (The Twilight of the Gods) with the English National Opera Ensemble; his other London roles have been Varlaam (Boris Godunov) and Ochs (Der Rosenkavalier). He made his US debut at St Louis in 1979, as Boris (Boris Godunov), and performed at the New York Metropolitan Opera House from 1979 as Klingsor (Parsifal), King Heinrich (Lohengrin), Marke (Tristan und Isolde), Boris, and Khovansky (Khovanshchina). In 1982 he sang Rocco (Fidelio) at Salzburg and the following year Hagen at Bayreuth. In 1990 he sang Marke at the Edinburgh Festival.
