Hauptmann, Moritz

Hauptmann, Moritz (1792–1868)

German theorist, writer on music, and composer. He studied in Dresden and began to work there, lived in Russia 1815–20, played violin in Ludwig Spohr's orchestra in Kassel from 1822, and was cantor at St Thomas's Church in Leipzig from 1842 to his death. He wrote on acoustics, harmony, and fugue.

Works

the opera Mathilde (1826); two Masses, motets and psalms; choruses and part-songs; three sonatas for violin and piano, violin duets; songs.
