Haut-Rhin

Département in the Alsace region of France; area 3,522 sq km/1,360 sq mi; population (1999 est) 708,000. The Rhine is the eastern boundary of the département, which is fertile and densely wooded. Cereals, vines, and hops are grown. Textiles, machinery, and foodstuffs are manufactured, and there are potash mines and factories. The opening of the Alsace Grand Canal after World War II improved navigation and increased traffic and trade opportunities along the Rhine. The principal towns are Colmar (the administrative centre) and Mulhouse.

Haut-Rhin is formed from part of the former province of Alsace.
