Haute-Corse

Département comprising the northern half of the French island of Corsica; area 4,666 sq km/1,801 sq mi; population (1999 est) 141,600. Together with Corse-du-Sud, it makes up the administrative region of Corsica. The highest peak on the island, Monte Cinto (2,710 m/8,891 ft) is located here; other peaks over 2,000 m/6,500 ft in Haute-Corse include Monte Rotondo (2,625 m/8,612 ft) and Col de Vergio (2,329 m/7,641 ft). Wine, olives, and olive oil are produced. The departmental capital is the port of Bastia on the northeast coast; other significant towns are Calvi, Corte, Calenzana, Ile-Rousse, and St Florent. Approximately one-third of the population lives in Bastia. The tourism industry has become increasingly important due to the area's unspoilt charm and beautiful coastlines.

The island of Corsica was divided into two départements in administrative reforms of 1974.
