Haute-Saône

Département in the Franche-Comté region of France; area 5,343 sq km/2,063 sq mi; population (1999 est) 229,700. The land is mainly a plateau, gradually descending from the Vosges Mountains in the north (highest point, Ballon de Servance, 1,182 m/3,900 ft) towards the south, and intersected by many valleys. The chief rivers are the Saône and its tributaries, the Coney, Lanterne, Durgeon, and Ognon. There is much forest, and wheat, oats, rye, and vegetables are grown. Some wine is produced. The principal towns are Vesoul (the administrative centre) and Lure.

Haute-Saône is formed from part of the former province of Franche-Comté.
