Hautes-Alpes

Département in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region of southeast France, bordered on the east by Italy; area 5,520 sq km/2,131 sq mi; population (1999 est) 121,400. The region is situated in the Alps; in the east are the slopes of the Cottian Alps. The main river is the Durance. The chief sources of income are livestock farming, cultivation of vines, fruit, and vegetables, and tourism, especially winter sports. The principal towns are Gap (the administrative centre) and Briançon.

Hautes-Alpes is formed from part of the former province of Dauphiné and part of Provence.
