Havelock, Henry

Havelock, Henry (1795–1857)

British soldier. He joined the army in 1815 and went to India eight years later. He served in the Burmese war (1824–26) and was aide-de-camp to Willoughby Cotton in the Afghan war of 1839. In the Indian Mutiny, during the last year of his life, he won worldwide renown. He captured Cawnpore in July and was promoted to major-general. In the following few months he effected the relief of Lucknow. A few days later he died.
