Haverstraw

Town in Rockland County, southeastern New York State; population (1990) 32,700. Haverstraw stands on the west bank of the Hudson River, 19 km/12 mi south of West Point.

A cooperative community was established in Haverstraw in 1825 by followers of the British social reformer Robert Owen. A system for manufacturing brick and cement was invented here, and these industries remain important to the town. There are also quarries and such manufactures as leather products, clothing, and hardware. Letchworth Village, a facility for the mentally ill, is situated in the town.
