Haviland, John (1792-1852)

English architect. He emigrated to Philadelphia (1816) and published The Builder's Assistant (1818-21). His innovative radial-plan Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia (1821-37) influenced jail design worldwide. Haviland was born in Gundenham Manor, Somerset, England.
