Havlicek, John

Havlicek, John (1940- )

US basketball player. After playing in three National Collegiate Athletic Association basketball finals at Ohio State (1960-62), he was drafted by the Cleveland Browns to play American football. He was cut from the team so he went to the Boston Celtics who had also drafted him as their number one pick. He played forward for the Boston Celtics (1962-78), where he led the club to eight National Basketball Association titles. Nicknamed ‘Hondo’, he was a superb defensive player, and in 1983 he was elected to basketball's Hall of Fame. Havlicek was born in Martin's Ferry, Ohio.
