Havre

City and seat of Hill County, north-central Montana, on the Milk River, 164 km/102 mi northeast of Great Falls; population (2000) 9,600. Havre was founded in 1879, and was named after Le Havre, in France, home of its original settlers.

The original town of Havre lay some 8 km/5 mi southwest, near Fort Assiniboine, but was relocated when the railway came to the area, and became an important junction. The city remains a shipping centre for local livestock and crops. It is home to Northern Montana College (founded 1929). Rocky Boy Indian Reservation (population 2,000) lies 24 km/15 mi south of the city.
