Havre de Grace

City in Harford County, northeastern Maryland, situated on Chesapeake Bay, at the mouth of the Susquehanna River, 53 km/33 mi northeast of Baltimore; population (1990) 9,000. The first settlers arrived here in 1658, and it has been a trade centre since the mid-19th century.

Havre de Grace has granite quarries, canneries, and commercial fisheries, and was formerly the terminus of a canal on the lower 72 km/45 mi of the Susquehanna. Although the city was burned by the British in the War of 1812, many of its early buildings have survived. The area contains resorts and waterfront estates.
