Hawke's Bay

Coastal region in eastern North Island, New Zealand; population (1996) 144,300. The main cities are Napier and Hastings. It is a major pipfruit and stonefruit growing region and is known as the ‘fruitbowl of New Zealand’. It is also one of New Zealand's most successful wine-making areas and has some of the country's oldest vineyards. The region suffered from a severe earthquake in 1931.

Hawke's Bay was named by James Cook after Sir Edward Hawke, then First Lord of the Admiralty.
