Hawke Bay

Hawke Bay

Inlet on the east coast of North Island, New Zealand. It is bounded on the northeast by Mahia peninsula and extends south to Mata-mawi cape, a total distance of about 96 km/60 mi. The surrounding area is one of New Zealand's most important primary production areas, with sheep and beef cattle. In 1769 Captain James Cook entered Hawke Bay in the Endeavour. The district was settled by Europeans in 1848.
