Hawkesbury

Town in Prescott and Russell United Counties, in the far east of Ontario; population (1991) 9,700. Hawkesbury stands on the Ottawa River, 80 km/50 mi west-northwest of Montréal and 89 km/55 mi east-northeast of Ottawa.

Founded in 1798, Hawkesbury has been a centre for flour milling, and more recently for hydroelectric power generation. Diverse industries now contribute to an economy once dominated by lumber and related products.
