Hawkins, John (1532–1595)

English navigator, born in Plymouth. Treasurer to the navy, 1573–89, he was knighted for his services as a commander against the Spanish Armada in 1588.

Hawkins, John (1719–1789)

English music historian and antiquary. Devoted at first to architecture and then to law, he gradually became interested in literature and music. Having married a wealthy woman in 1753, he was able to retire and to undertake, in addition to minor works, his General History of the Science and Practice of Music, published in five volumes in 1776, the same year as the first volume of Charles Burney's similar work.
