Hawthorne

City in Los Angeles County, southwestern California, 14 km/9 mi south-southwest of downtown Los Angeles; population (1990) 71,300. Established in 1922 in an area producing oil and natural gas, it now contains a variety of aerospace and defence-related manufacturers, as well as companies producing other forms of machinery.

Hawthorne

Unincorporated community and seat of Mineral County, in western Nevada; population (2000) 3,300. Hawthorne is located southeast of Walker Lake and 124 km/77 mi southeast of Carson City. Aurora lies some 40 km/25 mi to the southwest.

When founded in the 1880s, Hawthorne was a supply centre for the gold and silver mines of the area, then became a military post, and in the 1930s–40s grew into a major munitions depot. Tourism is now important to the economy.

Hawthorne

Borough in Passaic County, northeastern New Jersey, on the Passaic River north of Paterson; population (1990) 17,100. Settled in 1850, it is primarily a dormitory area for commuters working in New York.

Hawthorne is home to numerous commercial concerns and a wide variety of industries producing such goods as television parts, metal products, tiles, dyed textiles, paint, glass, chemicals, hosiery, and plastics.

Unincorporated village within Mount Pleasant town, Westchester County, southeastern New York State; population (1990) 4,800. Situated 10 km/6 mi north of White Plains, it is a residential community with some light industry.

The passages from Sketches from Memory show that Hawthorne had visited the mountains in one of his occasional rambles from home, but there are no entries in his Note Books which give accounts of such a visit.
In a letter to Nathaniel Hawthorne, given in 'Nathaniel Hawthorne and His Wife,' his daily life is set forth.
Some say that it was occupied by your own ancestor, William Hawthorne, first speaker of the House of Representatives.
