Hawthorne, Nigel (1929-2001)

English character actor. He gained popular recognition as the machiavellian civil servant Sir Humphrey Appleby in the 1980s British television comedies Yes, Minister and Yes, Prime Minister. A supporting player for many years in such British productions as Gandhi (1982), his leading performance as the troubled monarch in The Madness of King George (1994) further extended his career and earned him international acclaim. He also featured in Steven Spielberg's Amistad (1997) and the family comedy Madeline (1998).
