Hawtrey, Charles Henry (1858–1923)

British actor, theatre manager, and dramatist. He produced a number of light comedies, playing in them himself in what became known as ‘Hawtrey parts’. His greatest success was The Private Secretary (1884), which he adapted from a German play, Der Bibliothekar by Gustav von Moses. He was knighted in 1922.
