Hayes, Ira

Hayes, Ira (1932–1955)

US war hero. He was one of five marines photographed raising the US flag on Mt Suribachi, Iwo Jima, in 1945. Unable to deal with the adulation that followed the photograph's wide publication, he returned to the reservation where he died of alcoholism and exposure. Hayes was born in Sacaton, Arizona.
