Hayes, Isaac Israel (1832–1881)

US Arctic explorer and physician. He served as surgeon with the Arctic expedition of Elisha K Kane 1853–55. In 1860–61 he made an unsuccessful attempt to reach the North Pole.

In 1869 he joined a pleasure cruise to Greenland, described in his book The Land of Desolation (1871). He also published An Arctic Boat Journey (1860), and The Open Polar Sea (1867).
