Hayes, Philip

    0.02 sec.

Hayes, Philip (1738-1797)

English organist and composer, and the son of William Hayes. He succeeded his father as professor and organist at Magdalen College, edited many works by earlier composers, particularly Purcell and Boyce, and supervised Haydn's visit to Oxford in 1791. His works show some familiarity with symphonic style and include the oratorios Prophecy (1778) and The Judgement of Hermes (1783), 16 psalms, about 50 anthems, the masque Telemachus (1763), 17 Odes including Ode for St Cecilia's Day (1779), glees and catches, keyboard concertos, and sonatas. His extreme corpulence was responsible for his nickname ‘Fill Chaise’.
