Haynau, Julius Jakob, Baron von Haynau

    0.18 sec.

Haynau, Julius Jakob, Baron von Haynau (1786–1853)

Austrian general. He joined the Austrian army in 1801 and saw much service in the Napoleonic wars, being wounded at the battle of Wagram. He fought with distinction in the Italian campaigns of 1848–49, but showed ruthless severity at the capture of Brescia. In 1849 he was called to Vienna and took supreme military command in Hungary, where, as in Italy, he was accused of brutality. On the restoration of peace he was appointed dictator of Hungary, but resigned in 1850. Haynau was born at Kassel in modern-day Germany.
