Hiawatha (lived 15th century)16th-century American Indian teacher and Onondaga chieftain. He is said to have welded the Five Nations (later joined by a sixth) of the Iroquois into the league of the Long House, as the confederacy was known in what is now upper New York State. The hero of H W Longfellow's epic poem The Song of Hiawatha (1855) is an unrelated fictitious character. Hiawatha
