Hays

City and seat of Ellis County, in west-central Kansas, on Big Creek, 144 km/90 mi west of Salina; population (2000) 20,000. Hays was established in 1867 near Fort Hays, a military post on the Smoky Hill Trail.

Hays is now a railway distribution centre serving an area that produces oil, cattle, and grain; there is also some manufacturing industry here. It is the site of Fort Hays State University (founded 1902).
