Hayward

City in Alameda County, north-central California; population (1990) 111,500. Hayward is situated 23 km/14 mi south of Oakland, at the eastern end of the San Mateo Bridge, which crosses the southeast of San Francisco Bay.

Laid out in the 1850s on Guillermo Castro's rancho, Hayward first became known for its agriculture and livestock (especially poultry), and is today a manufacturing and distribution centre. Food processing and the manufacture of car and aircraft parts, electronic equipment, containers, plastics, and chemicals are among its industries. Campuses of California State University (1957) and Chabot College (1961) are sited here.
