Hazleton

City in Luzerne County, east-central Pennsylvania, 32 km/20 mi south-southwest of Wilkes-Barre; population (1990) 24,700. Situated at the summit of Spring Mountain, at a height of 575 m/1,886 ft, it has the highest elevation of any city in the state.

Hazleton was founded in the early 19th century as a coalmining centre. With the decline of that industry, the city sought to diversify its economy; manufactures now include clothing, iron and steel products, electronic equipment, and plastics. A campus of Pennsylvania State University is sited here.
