Head, Francis Bond

    0.01 sec.

Head, Francis Bond (1793–1875)

British soldier, traveller, and governor of upper Canada. He made several journeys over the Andes and across the Pampas, which he described in his Journeys across the Pampas (1826). Appointed governor of upper Canada in 1835, opposition to his administration culminated in a rebellion in 1837, following which he resigned.

He was born at Higham, Kent, England. In 1825 he was placed in charge of an association formed to work the South American gold and silver mines of Rio de la Plata; his journeys in the Andes and Pampas were made in connection with this work.

After resigning his Canadian governorship, the rest of his life was devoted to writing. Among his publications were Bubbles from the Brunnens of Nassau (1834), A Faggot of French Sticks (1862), and The Royal Engineer (1869).
