arrangement

In music, the adaptation of a piece to an instrument or instruments other than those for which it was originally composed.

For example, orchestral compositions can be ‘arranged’ for the pianoforte (or vice versa). In some cases the ‘recreation’ of a work in a new instrumental medium virtually qualifies as original composition, as, for instance, in the pianoforte arrangements of Liszt and Busoni.

Henderson's role in his most famous piece may have been less that of a creator than a transmitter and facilitator who wrote down one version of the head arrangement that his band had worked on for years, passing it along to Goodman, who in turn treated it as a fixed score with plenty of open space for improvised solos.
Inasmuch as these provisions can be expected to cost the company an additional $4 million or 8% of its current market capitalization, it is impossible to believe that ESG's Directors exercised due care in their approval of the Head arrangement.
