Heade, Martin

Heade, Martin (Johnson) (1819–1904)

US painter. His dramatic seascape, Approaching Storm: Beach near Newport (c. 1860) is considered his masterpiece, and his later botanical paintings are also highly acclaimed. The son of wealthy farmers, Heade was born in Lumberville, Pennsylvania. He studied with Edward Hicks (c. 1838), and moved to New York City (1866–81). Heade travelled widely, and finally settled in St Augustine, Florida (1885–1904).
