Health, Department of

UK government department established in 1988, following the division of the Department of Health and Social Security into two separate departments. It is responsible for the National Health Service, personal social services provided by local authorities, public health matters, and the health consequences of environmental and food issues (in England). The department has six executive agencies. The health secretary is Patricia Hewitt, from 2005.
