Health and Human Services, Department of| US government department responsible for overseeing the government's health and social security programmes. It replaced the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare in 1980. It employs more than 60,000 people and has a budget of over US$500 million (in 2003). The secretary is Mike Leavitt (from 2005). |
