Heart of Atlanta Motel Inc v. US

    0.03 sec.

Heart of Atlanta Motel Inc v. US

US Supreme Court decision of 1964 dealing with the constitutionality of certain Congressional measures designed to eliminate racial discrimination. The owner of the Heart of Atlanta Motel filed suit in protest of the Civil Rights Act 1964, which prevented him from racially discriminating against his customers. The Court upheld the Civil Rights Act, ruling that since the motel was a business involved in interstate travel, it was subject to federal regulation. This reversed the decision in the Civil Rights Cases 1883 that the government could not proscribe discrimination by private citizens.
