hearth tax

Unpopular national tax introduced in England in 1662 at two shillings for every fire hearth, with exemptions for the poor. It was part of the government's attempt to replace feudal dues with a more regular source of revenue but proved highly unpopular and it had to be abandoned 1689 (1690 in Scotland) in favour of a window tax.

Two records dating from the 17th century where you will find householders are the hearth tax (1662-1674) and Window Tax (1696-1851).
However, judging by the 1666 Hearth Tax Returns - an unpopular tax levied on every fire hearth in a household - the 600 souls living in Honley were not wealthy.
The hearth tax was abolished by William of Orange and replaced with the window tax, which led to people blocking up windows and consigning their houses to darkness.
