Hebrew BibleThe sacred writings of Judaism (some dating from as early as 1200 BC), called by Christians the Old Testament. It comprises the Torah (the first five books, ascribed to Moses), the Nevi'im (books of the prophets), and the Ketuvim (the remaining books and psalms). | Here Swartley makes plain that, as he understands it, Second Testament theology and ethics is incomprehensible apart from Hebrew scripture. The Hebrew scriptures also tell of Leviathan, a primordial gigantic enigmatic sea-creature (think Jonah's whale) that represents death. This is coupled with a recognition that Jewish readings of the Hebrew Scriptures in terms of understanding human redemption represent an authentic interpretation of these texts. |
