ivyAny of an Old World group of woody climbing, trailing, or creeping evergreen plants. English or European ivy (H. helix) has shiny five-lobed leaves and clusters of small, yellowish-green flowers followed by black berries. It climbs by means of rootlike suckers put out from its stem, and causes damage to trees. (Genus Hedera, family Araliaceae.) Ground ivy (Glechoma hederacea) is a small, originally European creeping plant belonging to the mint family; the North American poison ivy (Rhus radicans) belongs to the cashew family.
