Heidelberg man

Early hominid (member of the human family), 400,000–700,000 years old. Its existence is known from a fossil discovered near Heidelberg, Germany in 1907.

Based on the age of the fossil, Heidelberg man has been classified as a type of Homo erectus but could be an archaic H. sapiens (see human species, origins of).

The find consists of a single lower jaw with a receding chin and all its teeth. The jaw is extremely large and robust, like that of H. erectus, but the teeth are small. Judging from the fossil remains of animals in the layer of gravel surrounding it, the hominid must have lived in the Middle Pleistocene epoch.
