Heilbronn

River port in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, on the River Neckar, 47 km/29 mi north of Stuttgart; population (2005 est) 121,600. It trades extensively in wine. The town was rebuilt after World War II as a centre for electrical and mechanical engineering.

It was formerly a free city of the German Empire, and has associations with the Emperor Charles V, King Gustavus II Adolphus of Sweden, and the dramatist and poet Johann Schiller. The dramatist Heinrich von Kleist (1777–1811) immortalized the city in his Das Käthchen von Heilbronn (Katherine of Heilbronn).

The old town on the right bank of the river was almost completely destroyed during World War II, but some buildings have been restored, including the Renaissance Rathaus (town hall) and the church of St Peter and St Paul, originally the church of the Teutonic Knights.

It was a pretty slow concern, but it got us into Heilbronn before dark--five miles, or possibly it was seven.
